Joint pain and joint stiffness is the most common problem in young as well as aged peoples. Most of the peoples are not able to do their routine work due to their joint pain. The common cause for joint pain is unhealthy lifestyle and accumulation of impurities in the body with time. Unhealthy lifestyle include taking unhealthy food, MSG, coffee, wine, alcohol, cigarettes, street drugs, slouching while walking, sitting with wrong posture, sleeping in twisted positions and others. According to Ayurveda, Our body is meant to be formed with the five energies (Air, Space, Water, Fire and Earth). These five energies contribute to form three doshas (vatta dosha, kappa dosha, pitta dosha). Every dosha has its unique configuration which makes it different from other. To regulate all body functions normally, all doshas should be in balanced form. Imbalance between these doshas cause difficulty in various functions of body such as Imbalance of Vata dosha is the main cause behind joint pain conditions. When Vayana Vata, one of the five types of vata dosha that governs the blood circulation of body, nerves impulse, heart pulsation, breathing and entire body and mind movements gets imbalance then it cause joints pain also known as amavata.

Vata governs all movements of the body and mind and it has dry and liquid qualities. When vata dosha gets aggravated then it cause imbalance of Kapha dosha and lead to depletion of the lubricating qualities of kapha and synovial fluid that act as a cushion and lubrication fluid of the joint. Imbalance of Vanya Vata Dosha, weaken the digestive system, blood circulation and metabolism of body. Imbalance of these doshas causes the accumulation of Ama (a toxic substance) in the intestines which is produced from byproduct of waste material which is not excreted properly from the body. These toxic substances flow to various parts of body when comes into contact of blood stream. These toxic substances accumulate on the joints and results in the pain and discomfort of joints. These toxins mainly affect the ankle, knee, shoulder, back, wrist, elbow and fingers.

There is some simple test which you can perform at home. One of the most common tests which is preferred by vaidyas is: Gently massage sesame oil on the affected portion of joint. If symptoms are increases than it means there is accumulation of Ama in joints and that condition is known as Amavata.
